If you have a tank 40 gal. or more a sterilizer is a must! I have this unit on a 60 gal. running at 350-380 gal. per hour and have never had a clearer or cleaner tank. I am a proponent for over filtering, I like under gravel filters and many of the external box/waterfall filters. I find that many people max-out or over tax their filters by simply running to close to the recommended margins and pushing the limits to hard. I always have used an under-gravel filter(they are the cheapest form) then add a canister or box/waterfall filter as a support system. I formed this opinion by example of the Vancouver Aquarium where it was noted that the aquariums switched back and forth its dependence from one system the other. But the star of the show is the ODYSSEA Pro 18 Sterilizer. Cleaning of both my filter systems is easier and faster because of the reduction of live water borne algae entering the filter systems. Installation is easy and fast, remember not to touch the bulb with your fingers and the product is a nice compact design.Read full review

It is a big unit with a big usable but it's a straight shot around the UV bulb if it was a twisting type action the water would come in contact with UV light for a longer amount of time this type it goes straight through so the only way this is going to work properly if you can keep your filter on really low and you can't do that with African cichlids I just gave it to somebody else that has two filters on their tank it would be good for people that have 2 filters but 1 air filters would have to stay on so slow in order for this thing to work

I hooked this up to the Supreme pond filter I have. The bulb and quartz sleeve both broke on the Supreme and it was cheaper to buy this UV. The biggest issue I have is that there is NO warning to NOT look at the light when it's plugged in. At this price and construction quality I highly doubt there is a safety microswitch on the unit. I know better having been in the pet industry for 20+ years, but all it takes is literally a couple of seconds looking at a lit bulb and you will burn your retinas. Trust me, a friend of mine didn't head my warning with a different brand and almost incurred permanent eye damage. The other negative thing is that there is no indicator that the unit is receiving power and the bulb is lit. An LED would be good. The only way to know this thing is working is to wait for an effect on the water quality. That remains to be seen. I'll come back and update the review once I have the results, good or bad.Read full review

This is not a high quality UV Sterilizer as stated in the listing. The item I received was not as pictured on the sellers listing. The water input / output tube connectors show a three step adapter, mine only had two steps. Mine would not accept a standard 1' tube, I had to go to the hardware store and purchase adapters and tube clamps. The instructions are very poor and they are not in English. The power connector from the the sterilizer to the power supply is very poorly made. The end of the pins are very poor and I could not fully seat the connector. The unit did not work. Typical cheap junk from China, manufacturer does not have a web site.
