Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (July 30th, 2008)

A Saudi Arabian official has declared that the religious police have announced a ban on selling cats and dogs as pets, or walking them in public in the Saudi capital, "because of men using them as a means of making passes at women".

Saudi Arabia Bans Cats and Dogs

In a statement, the head of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice in Riyadh says that an old edict issued by the supreme council of Saudi scholars was being reinstated. The reason behind reinforcing the edict now was a rising fashion among some men using pets in public "to make passes on women and disturb families," he said, without giving more details.

Pet shops have been told to stop selling cats and dogs or risk repercussions from the 5000-strong religious police. The move by the religious police will raise questions about what will happen to cats and dogs if they are being confiscated; and how dog owners are supposed to exercise their dogs if walking them is banned.

Men will just find another way to try to pick up women. I think the problem lies within the man who is trying to get a woman's attention, not what he is walking with or holding in his hands.

In America, alot of women are attracted to a man who is out and about with his child(ren), a single dad. Good reason to start a conversation, especially if he has a cute kid. Would they ban walking down the street with your baby? Take the baby away?

This shouldn't be suprising. After all, Saudia Arabia's strict Wahabi sect of Islam is the most conservative of all of the various sects. In Saudia Arabia women cannot drive cars. One Saudi woman who had a scholarship to an American university had to have an escort to go to the US and the only one available was her 5 year old male cousin who was so young that his mother had to go with him to take care of him. What kind of a male escort is a 5 year old?

As other posters mentioned, what will happen to the animals? Cats are probably safer than dogs since they can live in the house and use the box.

I am so glad that I live in America. How stupid can the Saudis be? If they came over to America and saw how many ways men over here make passes at women, they would have to tie all the men up.

Just another small glimpse into the psyche of that Country and that part of the world. There is really something wrong when so called religious police are afraid of pets and have to control everything!!

The questions here are... What will happen to those pets? What kind of world do those women live in? And isn't this one of the counties in the middle east that we count as a friend?

What is it that Mahatma Gandhi said?, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated", and maybe we should add... How it treats its women, its children, people of other than the controlling faith etc etc.

And perhaps we/the world should have thought twice about awarding the Olympics to another country that has an appalling civil rights record and thinks that temporarily taking dogs and cats off their menus counts as improvement.

This is so absurd! What are these people thinking. These animals are innocent and I shudder to think what the future holds for them. If there's a petition available, I'll sign!

You have to wonder the real reason... I'm not sure of the exact countries, but it use to be believed that a woman would get to attached to the animal and not have children nor be interested in a relationship with here husband. Needless to say they would get rid of the the animal. You have to really wonder about a society that enslaves someone based on gender and has a hideous record on treatment of animals. So what about solar energy?

I too am happy I live in the USA, hopefully they won't just kill the poor animals that are there now :( over their stupidity!!! I could never live in a world with no animals personally, I think they are wonderful and the best friend anyone could have. God be with them all!!!!

The idiocy of this ban is unbelievable. Are they going to ban wildlife next? I hope some organization for animal welfare can step in here to stop this madness. I say we should get rid of all the religious zealots. Unbelievable!

I find this ridiculus. I agree I am glad I live in America. So what do they do with the cats and dogs already purchased. Kill them?
